History

Waters & Brown has been a family-owned business since opening in 1895.

Founded in historic Salem, Mass. by Henry A. Waters and J. Clarke Brown in the closing years of the 19th century, W&B served the bustling seaport as a major source of building supplies, paints, and marine hardware.

Brothers Donald and Edward Clarke purchased the company in 1969 and expanded the established hardware store to serve homeowners and designers as well, with an increasing emphasis on fine paints and interior design. In the years since Waters & Brown has continued to grow, becoming one of the leading sources of unique products and professional guidance in the New England region.

Shaun Clarke grew up in the business alongside his father Donald and took over management in 1990. Having worked through every aspect of the business since boyhood, Shaun is a recognized expert in paint and design technology. He takes as much pride in the work Waters & Brown has done for world-class institutions as for the first time apartment renter.
